Tumelo Matebesi (Pretoria, South Africa/Willowridge) recorded a hat trick to lead the Carl Sandburg College men’s soccer team to its fourth straight win in a 4-0 victory over Kennedy-King on Monday afternoon at Galesburg High School’s Van Dyke Field.

Matebesi took sole possession of the team lead in goals (12) while notching his first hat trick and fourth multi-goal effort of the season. Three of those outings have come during the Chargers’ current streak, which has seen them outscore their opponents 18-3. The victory also helped Sandburg (5-9-1 overall, 5-5-1 Region IV) even its record in Region IV play.

Playing with a strong wind at their backs in the first half, the Chargers dominated play early and took a 1-0 lead into the break behind Matebesi’s goal in the 35th minute off a feed from Mike Pavon (Galveston, Texas/Willis).

Sandburg doubled its lead in the 56th minute when, just moments after the Statesmen (3-11) missed wide on a breakaway opportunity, Matebesi made a run down the left side and put a shot inside the near post.

Pavon hit a rocket into the upper 90 to give the Chargers a 3-0 lead in the 62nd minute, and Matebesi finished off the hat trick with a rebound shot that found the top right corner of the goal in the 80th minute.

Sandburg’s offensive firepower was more than enough to back keeper Saahil Kapoor (Guilford, England/Guilford County), who made one save while recording his second straight clean sheet.

Sandburg will look to stay hot as it travels to take on McHenry County at 4 p.m. Thursday
